Beneath this wide-open state lies some of the most prolific fossil deposits in the country. Paleontology is so much a part of Wyoming’s history that it has an official state dinosaur (triceratops) and state fossil (a fish). Fossilized frogs, turtles, fish, and insects reveal to scientists that much of Wyoming (at various periods in time) was covered in shallow seas and massive freshwater lakes. Dinosaurs roamed the area as well. The sedimentary layers of the seas trapped the remains of plant and animal life, creating the perfect environment for fossils to form.  The seas and lakes eventually withdrew, revealing the rich deposits of marine and dinosaur fossils formed over millions of years. Once discovered, fossil dig sites attracted paleontologists and amateur fossil hunters from around the world. And still do!
