North Dakota has very few trees. As part of the Great Plains region, the climate and topograhy of the state favor grasslands and prairies over forests. Throughout the years, especially in the 1930s, farmers and homeowners have planted rows of trees as protection against the harsh winters and damaging winds. Many of these windbreaks are still standing today with some impressively tall trees. But most of the largest and tallest in the state can be found in the city of Fargo where trees have been planted for decades as “urban forests”. The trees beautify the city, provide shade and shelter, and improve the environment. This design features a tree-lined street in Fargo on a very snowy winter day. As the snow blankets the neighborhood, the colors of houses and cars are nearly imperceptible, creating a beautiful almost sepia toned scene.
