On June 14, 1846, a small group of American settlers marched upon the Mexican-run barracks in Sonoma, raised a homemade flag with a bear on it, and declared California a Republic, independent from Mexico.  Although no shots were fired and no one was injured, the incident came to be known as the “Bear Flag Revolt” or the “Bear Flag Uprising”.  After many revisions over several decades, the final version of the bear flag was adopted in 1953.  History buffs can still step back in time and visit the original barracks at lovely Sonoma State Historic Park or check out Bear Flag Monument in Sonoma Plaza and stand at the very site where the first Bear Flag was flown!

This design features a fun adaptation of the state flag (and a big fat bear) against a clear blue sky with an optional pom-pom of golden sunshine.  Leave the finished hat as is or add simple embroidered words such as CALIFORNIA, CALIFORNIA REPUBLIC, or I  love     CALIFORNIA.  The choice is yours!
